Bemerkungen:

Britische Kultband, die seit den frühen 80ern den Psychedelic / Space Rock aus den 70ern auf ihre Art mit diversen neuen Stilelementen u.a. aus der World Music, sowie Ambient- und Elektronik-Klängen modernisiert hat. So wird die Musik vor allem von Bandgründer und Mastermind Ed Wynne an der Gitarre, wie aber auch den ständig präsenten Blubber-Keyboards und treibenden Grooves geprägt, die vor allem live ihre volle Magie entfalten. Vor über einem Jahrzehnt habe ich mir mal ein paar Ozric-CDs zugelegt, danach verschwanden sie (für mich) etwas in der Versenkung - ein Fehler, wie ich jetzt nach mehrmaligem Wiederhören von Erpsongs feststellen muss.

Erpsongs, nicht zu verwechseln mit dem einige Jahre später erschienenen Erpland, gehört zu den frühesten Veröffentlichungen der Ozrics, genau genommen war es die erste von insgesamt sechs Kassetten, die Mitte bis Ende der 80er Jahre noch vor dem CD-Debüt der Band erschienen. Anfang der 90er folgte die CD-Ausgabe, wobei es auch eine Box mit allen 6 CDs unter dem Titel Vitamin Enhanced gibt/gab. Der Informationsgehalt der CD ist äußerst spärlich, nicht mal eine Besetzungsangabe ist vorhanden.

Was den Hörer hier erwartet, lässt sich in den Rezensionen zu anderen frühen Ozric-Alben nachlesen, die Unterschiede sind wahrlich nicht groß. Treibende, nicht sehr komplexe Rhythmen, spacige Gitarren, blubbernde Elektronik. Vergleichbar ist das am ehesten einer stärker elektronisch orientierten Ausgabe von Hawkwind. Bei einigen Stücken, wie Synth on a Plynth, Tidal Otherness oder Misty Gliss, dominiert die Elektronik ganz. Gerade Misty Gliss erinnert dabei mit seinem pulsierenden Rhythmus schon etwas an die Werke der Berliner Schule.

Wie Kollege Kristian an anderer Stelle schon schrieb, heißt es bei den Ozrics "lieben oder hassen" - bei mir gilt ersteres.

Ozric Tentacles biography
OZRIC TENTACLES are simply put, legends of the UK underground. Inspired by a myriad of musical genres and musicians from Kraut-rockers KRAAN to guitar maestro Steve VAI, from ethnic Arabic to electronic techno, from HENDRIX to HILLAGE. OZRIC TENTACLES' music is a fusion of sounds, styles and genres that cannot be categorized nor plagiarized, such is its complexity.

The essence of the OZRIC TENTACLES remains essentially a free-willed musical unit oblivious to fashion trends and intent on exploring instrumental experimental music with an obsessive zeal. Formed in the early eighties, the Ozrics began life as a free-form psychedelic vehicle for jamming, attracting a dedicated fan-base at grassroots level by playing at all the free festivals to fans of space-rock, dub, psychedelia, and later on when the festivals had developed into raves, to fans of house and techno. Having then developed their own cottage industry - studio, label, tour bus, dedicated following - the Ozrics eventually achieved top ten album status in the UK with their 1993 album "Jurassic Shift". It was, and still is, an astonishing accomplishment for a band with no celebrity status, and no major record label backing.

To date, the band have released 20 albums, a vast body of music that is both complex and fascinating in its scope and vision. The new live double album, "Pongmasters Ball" was recorded at their sold-out show at London's Shepherds Bush Empire earlier this year. The DVD of this show will be released in September. Live Ethereal Cereal (also known as "the yellow one") is the third of Ozric Tentacles' first six independent releases on cassettes, each one with a different background color. Released by the band in 1986, it was reissued on CD by Dovetail Records in 1994. If it weren't for the poor sound quality of these live recordings, this album would rank among the band's best efforts. Tracks have been culled from shows in Glastonbury (October 1985) and Reading (September and December 1985, plus February 1986). The "Erpriff" opens the set with a hard-rocking beat, Hawkwind-like guitar riff, and swirling synthesizers: pure Ozric. "Tentacular Explosion" and "Obstacular Explosion" are anchored by a similar rhythmical pattern but take different directions, the former being the most energized (great percussion work here). The obligatory reggae jam takes the form of a "Stupid Reggae" -- good clean fun. The album reaches a peak moment with "Aumriff," a take on Gong's famous jamming theme from You. Each track is a memorable Ozric moment and if one doesn't mind the subpar sound, Live Ethereal Cereal is thoroughly enjoyable. Recall, a division of Snapper Music, has reissued the album as a two-CD set with There Is Nothing with new artwork under the title There Is Nothing/Live Ethereal Cereal.
