Interview with Alan White 3rd March 2014. BN. Good Afternoon Alan. Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to me today.
BN. You’ve been in the Studio for a few weeks working on the new Album – is it just about complete now?
AW. There’s a bit to do, but we’re getting close to finishing it now. We could be finished by the end of this week.
BN. Reports from other interviews suggest that there was a wealth of new Material “enough for 2 albums” ..?
AW. There wasn’t quite enough for two Albums. We decided we would work with what we had and take it to this point. There is some extra stuff but it would take it a lot of work to make it to a Yes album.
BN. Roy Thomas Baker worked on the Paris sessions back in 79, which must have been a difficult time for him given the emotions within the band at that time. Did Roy feel he had a bit of unfinished business with the band?
AW. Roy’s doing fine. He’s doing a great job. He’s getting some great sounds on the instruments. Regarding the Paris sessions, when I broke my ankle it may have been a blessing in disguise, because it wasn’t turning out like we wanted it, but this one is.
BN. There are some strong personalities within Yes. Is RTB able to impose himself sufficiently?
AW. Roy is a smart guy and he knows where we should be going. He is getting on fine with the guys. He says his piece and he is very much part of what is going on.
BN. Every musician wants to get his sound just right when it goes onto disc. Do you spend a lot of one on one time with the producer to get YOUR sound right?
AW. We spent quite a while getting the drum sound right. Roy is quite meticulous about which microphones get the right sound. We were using about $50,000 worth of microphones on the drums alone.
BN. Fly from Here included some refreshed music from the Drama era. Can we expect any revisited material this time around or is it all fresh Music?
AW. It’s all fresh music. Everything on the album was conceived within the last year or so.
BN. Any “Yesepics” this time around, or will it be a mix of 5 to 10 minute pieces?
AW. No epics on this album but there are some longer pieces with intricate parts to them, but there are some shorter tracks too which are right to the point.
BN. Do you have a working title?
AW. We are on the brink of having a title right now. We are working with Roger Dean on exactly what that is.
The Cruise
BN. You have announced “a NEVER SEEN BEFORE” performance for the Cruise which is quite intriguing – any hints which I can share with my fellow sailors?
AW. Well, there will be a mix of what we did last year and some other material. Unfortunately because it’s a cruise we’re not allowed to play as long as we would like, so we have to be selective on what we play in the time allotted to us. We’re still tossing ideas around of what the set should be.
BN. Patrick Moraz will be on board this year, which has many fans speculating that he may play a guest spot with Yes, and play something from Relayer..is that a possibility?
AW. We’ll have to see when we get there. A lot of that stuff will come out when we are out there on the Ocean. We might do something with Patrick, but I’m not sure. We’ve really been locked into the album, and the cruise is down the line a bit, so we’ll think about some of these things later.
BN. It’s a unique atmosphere on board – mad fans (like me) mingling with their idols. Did the artists have concerns about this, and what was their general opinion of the fan/artist interaction?
AW. Everybody in the band enjoyed the cruise. We had a lot of fun, and that’s really why we decided to another one this year.
BN. What about Cruise to the Edge 2015?
AW. They’ve already asked us to do that, so we are thinking about that.
BN. I’ve started a campaign to have Cruise to the Edge 2015 come to Europe. Is that something you have been considering, or would consider if the promoters were able to offer something viable?
AW. I know that’s been going around, but we haven’t really thought about it. That’s way down the line. We need to get this one done first.

Tomorrow I start with Jon Davison, Squire comes in later in the day to sing, Steve Howe after that and so on for the next week or so... As Pacino said in Godfather 3 "They keep pulling me back in !!" lol. Looking forward to seeing the lads tomorrow, viva la YES
"Leave It"!5.
